BMW and Toyota to collaborate on hydrogen: First mass-produced hydrogen vehicle to arrive in 2028
BMW’s vice president of hydrogen vehicle development, Michael Rath , stated that the two companies will primarily focus on hydrogen fuel cell technology and will work together in this area. While BMW will develop its own hydrogen tanks, Toyota and BMW will jointly increase the technology level of hydrogen-powered fuel cells. However, it should be noted that the two brands will develop their own models separately and will not work on a joint model.
The partnership between Toyota and BMW aims to standardize components for hydrogen vehicles and reduce costs. They will also work together to increase the number of hydrogen fueling stations and overcome barriers to widespread use. The partnership originally began in 2012.
Meanwhile, Toyota is one of the few companies that continues to produce hydrogen-based passenger vehicles, having sold 26,000 Mirai models to date. BMW is testing its experience in this area with a limited-edition iX5 model. The two companies stressed that cooperation between governments and industries is needed for hydrogen technology to gain a solid foothold in the automotive sector.
